BROWN CALLS FOR TRAFFIC CHANGES TO FLAGSTAFF HILL
One-way traffic could be the solution to parking, safety and congestion at the popular Flagstaff Hill precinct according to Wollongong Deputy Lord Mayor Tania Brown.
Cr Brown has via a notice of motion at Monday night’s Council meeting called on Council to expedite a traffic study for the area to protect pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.
The motion calls for additional parking, improved traffic flow and safety around the city centre foreshore area.
“Locals tell me they want more parking at the foreshore and one-way traffic on Endeavour Drive, with parallel or 45 degree parking, could help achieve that,” Cr Brown said.
“We all know how busy the area can be, particularly in summer, so we also need to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.”
“We talk about being a city for people and improving walkability but we routinely prioritise cars over people - this area is clearly shared by a variety of users.
“Changing how we move around this popular pedestrian precinct and making car flow one way, could increase safety for everyone.
“I previously called for the Wollongong Foreshore Parking strategy and we have seen changes arising from that, including additional pop up parking around beaches over summer and timed parking at popular locations to encourage turn over - but no progress has been made at Flagstaff Hill.
“I’m aware of plans to introduce a raised priority pedestrian crossing on Endeavour Dr, near the roundabout with Marine Drive / Cliff Road but we need more action in this busy location,“ Cr Brown said.
